Hello- we bought a Manchester stove 3 days ago.It is replacing a cast iron stove we've had for many years but it was time to upgrade as the stove was 30 yrs old. First store we went to said that the Equinox would be perfect for us. We wanted a soapstone anyway. We liked this stove alot. We did some more research and a friend told us to go to a store where he bought his soapstone stove. We went - and the woman told us that the Equinox was not for us that they are only used in ski lodges and showed us the Manchester. Which we bought. We had our heart set on the Equinox but was told that it would not heat the house the way our old stove did and that going from a cast iron to a soapstone we would not be happy. She said that even sitting next to it you would not feel the heat from it and it and we would not be happy. Well we are not really happy with the Manchester. While it did heat the house, it did take time.Our old stove heated the house within 2 hours. Now that we have it we are wondering a few things. It really doesn't have a big firebox and how much wood can you safely put in it - I don't see how you can get 8-10 hour burn time. We have been putting in 2-3 pieces at a time and monitoring it. I think sales people should listen to the customer and not talk them out of an item they came into buy. Also she told us to never put any logs burning against the glass so we are constantly monitoring it to make sure this doesn't happen. We are getting up during the night every 2 hours to check on this - our old stove did not have glass doors. We are worried that when we leave the house for a few hours what will happen?? We used to pack our old stove and come home in 6 hours and there was no problem. Can we do this with the Manchester? What will happen to the glass if a log does accidentally fall over?? We have a 1400 sq ft house - with 2 levels. On the main floor the back half has an add on room that we used to heat with the old stove - so far we have been opening and closing the doors to the main living area since the temp fluctuates. The whole idea of getting another stove was so we could heat this room and turn off this zone of heating. A suggestion is to make the glass doors with a heavy screen against the glass so IF any logs do fall the screening will protect the glass. I would appreciate your comments and any suggestions you may have for us. We have been burning with a wood stove for 33 years and this stove seems to be high maintenance. I am sorry that I got rid of my old stove. By the way we wanted a side loader and that is why we bought the Manchester. Still want the Equinox. Not happy with this one.
Bill, the Equinox is a great stove. It heats an area up to 3,500 sq ft. The Manchester heatas up to 2,500 sq ft. With a properly set up chimney and good draft the Manchester is capable of getting a 12 hour Burn Time and 14 hour Heat Life. As far as the glass goes, we do extensive test of the glass to make sure it will not break when a log hits it. We put the glass through a shock and impact test which includes a 2 pound metal bal dropped on the glass from a foot away. We also have to pass the same test with EPA to be able to manufacture the stoves. You should not worry about leaving the stove on for hours and leaving your home. The Manchester has a soapstone lined firebox which maintains heat for a long time, this is what we call Heat Life. We have had customers say that they have had the same exact results as we did in the video above. They have left the stove on over night on a low air control and in the morning they had put a piece of wood in and the stove fired right up.
As far as the space in your hous goes, a soapstone would work fine. Soapstone radiates heat throughtout the house, which is why we line all of our stove with soapstone including caston iron ones such as the Manchester.

As I said we were prepared to buy the Equinox but the sales rep at the store talked us out of it - and said that the Manchester would be better since it throws more heat she said we would not be happy with the soapstone model Equinox. I am a little annoyed at myself for allowing her to talk me into a stove I did not want.we wanted the equinox and now are stuck with manchester - yes it does the job, but I've noticed that I do have to keep temp high to maintain the whole house whereas the equinox probably would have done the job differently. Thanks for the info on the glass at least I know a little more. Would the EQUINOX really be too big for my house??? Also the ash pan is a disaster - there is NO ash in the pan after 3 days I had to shake the grate and then got a real mess even behind the ash pan. So I am going back to my old way of shoveling out the coals. The ash pan system is not a good system it needs improvement. Also What do you recommend for cleaning the glass newspaper in ash or a stove glass cleaner. I read online about Rutland Glass cleaner it is paste and it says it puts a coating on the glass so the creosote and soot doesn't stick on the glass and you can easily wipe it off.
